Wolf Moon

January 30th, 2010. Published under Uncategorized. No Comments.

So last night was the full Wolf Moon and it was so pretty looking out on the lake. Kids were at a birthday party and I was home sick with a bad cold. Guess I picked it up at the Sport Show in Milwaukee. Any way when the kids came home Ashley saw a wolf by the back of the trailer. She came in the house and we watched it walk out on the lake soon another one came out the bush and walked towards the narrows. With the moonlight you could really see them well. They were both black ones and pretty darn big.

WILDLIFE HERE IN NESTOR FALLS

I was working on my February Newsletter and this Deer just came running across the bay up on our Docks. I wonder if the Wolves were chasing him. This one is all by itself which is unusual at this time of the year.

We got rain with the snow the other day so the conditions are awful right now for the Deer.  As they run through the crusty snow the Deer cut up there legs while the wolves can run on top. They really don’t stand a chance against these predators.

WINTER IN NESTOR FALLS

Winter in Nestor Falls Ontario Canada

It’s winter in Canada and the gentle breezes blow Seventy miles an hour at thirty-five below. Oh, how I love Canada. When the snow’s up to your butt and you take a breath of winter and your nose gets frozen shut. Yes, the weather here is wonderful. So I guess I’ll hang around I could never leave Canada I’m frozen to the friggin’ ground!

All kidding a side. We just got another 6 inches of snow and under this snow is probably another 6 inches of ice. It blew like crazy yesterday that you could not see across the lake here. Winter in Canada is for the kids.

What’s for Dinner?

Kay, Ashley and I have been feeding the foxes this winter. We have a family of three who visit most every night. One is red with a little white on his neck, the other is a beautiful black one with sliver tip tail which Dave’s mother Kay believes is the momma and the third one which looks like a cross between the two.

Tonight was like any other feeding except that the fox began to bark so Ashley went out to see what the problem was with dinner. We had company for dinner the Wolves were back on top of the hill she could hear them howling. I suppose they were on the hunt of the Deer. I hope they don’t get the nice buck.

Nature can be so cruel.

Car Wash

Global warming has arrived in Nestor Falls. January 14th and can you believe it; it is 40 degrees here today. Unbelievable. Us girls took advantage of the weather to get the cars cleaned up. This should shorten our winter.

Ashely

Nestor Falls Fly-In Outposts Keeper Lake

Al Tucker sent me this picture this morning from his fly in fishing trip to Keeper Lake. I can’t wait to see the open water again. It is nice to look over the lake with the snow but nothing beats the open water. There isn’t anything prettier than open water and I look forward to spring.

We are a balmy 20 F already this morning. It looks like it is shaping up to be a great day. Dave and Matt left early this morning for the Sport Show in Chicago.

Hope everyone enjoys the day.

Happy New Year!

As I am sitting here in the office writing this four Deer are on my septic field digging for food and eating the shrubs. They look healthy and it is a good thing the wolves are gone for now anyway. And my camera batteries are dead.

Well the deep freeze is still alive in the North. This morning I woke up to -20 F with a breeze.  Despite the temperatures Jon and James braved the temperature and headed out to do some ice fishing. It was pretty warm in the shack. They caught a nice Walleye and 2 big Northerns so they had a good day.

Last Monday I was up at the hanger working and Kasey was here working at the base by herself. As she was working she noticed that there were two wolves walking along the deck of the office.  Molson must of got a smell of them and stared barking; the wolves took off to the narrows where they laid probably waiting for the Deer to cross. Lucky the Deer did not show till a few days later.

For the New Year we wish you all love, happiness and good health.

Bass released at Kay LakeNestor Falls Fly In Smallmouth BassKay Lake Bass

We were on a fly in fishing trip in Ontario Canada at Kay Lake Outpost cabin late May. Weather was tough-lots of wind-fronts moved in & out-rain. Only a couple of days of sun. When we were bass fishing we picked up mostly single bass-most good size 4+ Biggest 19 3/4 inch. Good numbers of trout and muskies. Once again a great trip even if the weather was wet- just awesome to be here.
Again Thanks Dave & Michelle
See ya next yr!!

Merry Christmas

December 24th, 2009. Published under Uncategorized. No Comments.

It was a busy wildlife sighting day here in the North Country. Yesterday when Buster was turning down Nestor Falls Fly-In Road on his way to work a beautiful Timber Wolf ran across the road on top of the hill.

Then Dave and I were on our way back from Fort Frances finishing up our last minute holiday shopping and saw a Cow and Calve Moose just south of Nestor Falls. They had just crossed the highway and were walking along the tree line. Dave and I both said Moose at the same time. They are not like Deer at night they just kinda blend in with the dark hides. We stopped the car to have a better look. What a beautiful sight.

Christmas is a very special time of year. We are thinking of you at Christmas with a wish that every day of the New Year will be a happy one for you. Happy Holidays.

Big Game hunting Ontario Canada

December 21st, 2009. Published under Uncategorized. No Comments.

December 15th was the last day for big game Moose and Deer. It was a beautiful day; actual temperature was -18 F.

Dave, Jon, Robin, Dave R and Dan were busy trying to fill Deer and Moose tags. The boys each got their Deer but no Moose were seen. Dave and I only had a Calf Moose tag this year.  This is the first time in 32 years that we have not gotten a Moose for the freezer.

I thought this was an interesting video. If only it was this easy moose hunting.
