What better way to spend your day off than spending it with your family on lake. The crappie fishing has been slow this winter in Nestor Falls. But today the fish where biting.
OUTPOST BREAK IN
February 24th, 2010. Published under Uncategorized. No Comments.
We don’t have to worry about people breaking into our remote Outpost Cabins you need to worry about wildlife. Such the case at our fly-in Outpost Cabin on Clear Lake. Dave & I just got a call from the Natives up north. I guess they were tracking a Wolverine on Clear Lake and tracked it to the cabin. He entered through the front window. They told us that his paw prints were as big as a bear.
The wolverine is a powerful animal that resembles a small bear but is actually the largest member of the weasel family. These tough animals are solitary, and they need a lot of room to roam. Wolverines may travel 15 miles in a day in search of food. Wolverines eat a bit of vegetarian, like plants and berries, in the summer season, but this does not make up a major part of their diet—they are tenacious predators with a taste for meat. Wolverines easily dispatch smaller prey, such as rabbits and rodents, but may even attack animals many times their size, such as caribou, elk, and deer. They have also been known to dig into burrows and eat hibernating mammals.
Average life span in the wild for the Wolverine is 7 to 12 years. There head and body can be as large as 26 to 34 inches and there tails are 7 to 10 inches. These animals can weight 24 to 40 lbs. Wolverine compare with adult 6-ft man.
Males scent-mark their territories. It is believed that they will have more than one mate. Females den in the snow or under similar cover to give birth to two or three young each late winter or early spring. Kits sometimes live with their mother until they reach their own reproductive age—about two years old.
We are flying up on Friday to check on the cabin and close up the window. I’ll keep you posted on this.
Nestor Falls Fly-In invites your family to meet our family

We have been busy here at Nestor Falls Fly-In Outposts selling fly in fishing trips in Ontario, Canada this winter in the office and at the Sport Shows. Dave was on the road all of January. This month we have our Son Jon, his wife Kasey and our grandson Ryan doing the shows for us. The kids just got home a few days ago from doing a couple of Sport Shows in the United States. As you can see in the above picture little Ryan is reaching out for business. This is his second year attending the shows. Ryan didn’t sell any trips but sure had fun running through the show. What the heck you can’t start them out to young. Kidding a side Ryan was pretty good at the shows. He is now cutting his molars and once in awhile he will slip you a kiss and you can always get a big hug.
The weather has been pretty nice up here the last week that we are getting excited about summer and starting to think fishing. It will be here soon.
Wolf Moon

So last night was the full Wolf Moon and it was so pretty looking out on the lake. Kids were at a birthday party and I was home sick with a bad cold. Guess I picked it up at the Sport Show in Milwaukee. Any way when the kids came home Ashley saw a wolf by the back of the trailer. She came in the house and we watched it walk out on the lake soon another one came out the bush and walked towards the narrows. With the moonlight you could really see them well. They were both black ones and pretty darn big.
WILDLIFE HERE IN NESTOR FALLS

I was working on my February Newsletter and this Deer just came running across the bay up on our Docks. I wonder if the Wolves were chasing him. This one is all by itself which is unusual at this time of the year.
We got rain with the snow the other day so the conditions are awful right now for the Deer. As they run through the crusty snow the Deer cut up there legs while the wolves can run on top. They really don’t stand a chance against these predators.
WINTER IN NESTOR FALLS
January 26th, 2010. Published under Uncategorized. No Comments.
It’s winter in Canada and the gentle breezes blow Seventy miles an hour at thirty-five below. Oh, how I love Canada. When the snow’s up to your butt and you take a breath of winter and your nose gets frozen shut. Yes, the weather here is wonderful. So I guess I’ll hang around I could never leave Canada I’m frozen to the friggin’ ground!
All kidding a side. We just got another 6 inches of snow and under this snow is probably another 6 inches of ice. It blew like crazy yesterday that you could not see across the lake here. Winter in Canada is for the kids.
What’s for Dinner?
January 22nd, 2010. Published under Uncategorized. No Comments.
Kay, Ashley and I have been feeding the foxes this winter. We have a family of three who visit most every night. One is red with a little white on his neck, the other is a beautiful black one with sliver tip tail which Dave’s mother Kay believes is the momma and the third one which looks like a cross between the two.
Tonight was like any other feeding except that the fox began to bark so Ashley went out to see what the problem was with dinner. We had company for dinner the Wolves were back on top of the hill she could hear them howling. I suppose they were on the hunt of the Deer. I hope they don’t get the nice buck.
Nature can be so cruel.
Canadian Weather

Global warming has arrived in Nestor Falls. January 14th and can you believe it; it is 40 degrees here today. Unbelievable. Us girls took advantage of the weather to get the cars cleaned up. This should shorten our winter.
The Nestor Falls Fly-In men are in Chicago and St Paul this weekend selling fly-in fishing trips in Ontario Canada. I will head down to Milwaukee to meet up with Dave for the weekend sport show there. Jon and Kasey come home Monday tomorrow from St Paul they will have a couple weeks break and they will be doing the shows for us in February.
Keeper Lake view

Al Tucker sent me this picture this morning from his fly in fishing trip to Keeper Lake. I can’t wait to see the open water again. It is nice to look over the lake with the snow but nothing beats the open water. There isn’t anything prettier than open water and I look forward to spring.
We are a balmy 20 F already this morning. It looks like it is shaping up to be a great day. Dave and Matt left early this morning for the Sport Show in Chicago.
Hope everyone enjoys the day.
Happy New Year!

As I am sitting here in the office writing this four Deer are on my septic field digging for food and eating the shrubs. They look healthy and it is a good thing the wolves are gone for now anyway. And my camera batteries are dead.
Well the deep freeze is still alive in the North. This morning I woke up to -20 F with a breeze. Despite the temperatures Jon and James braved the temperature and headed out to do some ice fishing. It was pretty warm in the shack. They caught a nice Walleye and 2 big Northerns so they had a good day.
Last Monday I was up at the hanger working and Kasey was here working at the base by herself. As she was working she noticed that there were two wolves walking along the deck of the office. Molson must of got a smell of them and stared barking; the wolves took off to the narrows where they laid probably waiting for the Deer to cross. Lucky the Deer did not show till a few days later.
For the New Year we wish you all love, happiness and good health.
